During the occupation of the Japanese
The japanese occupation was regarded as the darkest period in the Singapore history. The Japanese were very harsh and strict rulers . The Japanese military police even raped the women and were forced into sexual slavery. Allied soldies were also forced to march from padang to Selarang Barracks .The Japanese also used fear to to rule Singapore. The slightest offence made resulted to a very severe punishment . The eurasians were also treated more harshly as the Japanese felt that they were a treat to them . The Japanese tried to win the support of the indians and malays an they convinced them that they would free them from the British Rule. Due to the occupation the prices of resources such as rice had greatly increased. The japanese had to issue ration cards to control the amount of food each person got. As food quality was decreasing tapioca , sweet potatoes and
yam became the main source of food . It was because it was much cheaper then rice and could be grown in gardens. The Japanese then started to use banana notes (As seen on the left) as their currency. They didnt not last long as when ever the authorities had no money they would just print them . The japanese also encourage them to grow their own food. Food that was bought was either mixed with impurity or was very hard to eat , these increased the popularity of growing food .
